The old jail was the strongest in Clay County and perhaps western Missouri when it was constructed with its four-foot-thick walls. Rigdon was born in St. Clair Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, on February 19, 1793. He was the youngest of four children of William and Nancy Rigdon.
